Buchan Ness lighthouse

Tower Height: 35 metres, white conical tower with red band
There are 166 steps to top of tower.
The red band was hand painted in 1907 to distinguish it as a day mark

Elevation: 40 metres

Range: flashing white every 5 seconds, visible for 28 miles

This light is operational

built 1827 by Robert Stevenson

Date automated: 1988
In 2000 the fog horn was discontinued

Current use: Active aid to navigation
